The Versatile Tirfor Winch

On December 18, 2024 by admin

A tirfor winch has become a ubiquitous sight on worksites and farms across the UK. But what exactly are these distinctive looking contraptions?

Invented in the 1920s by logging engineers in Oregon, the Tirfor is a grip hoist that uses wire rope and a set of jaws to provide pulling power. Its gripping mechanism allows it to grab onto loads in situations where hooks, chains and straps won’t suffice.

A key advantage of the Tirfor winch is its versatility. The self-gripping jaws can latch onto timber, pipes, machinery and more. This makes it handy for pulling, lifting, dragging and securing all manner of awkward loads.

On farms and agricultural settings, Tirfors come into their own for tasks like moving hay bales, hauling equipment, and extracting stuck vehicles. Tirfors attached to tractors or other vehicles can multiply their towing capacity.

In forestry and tree surgery, Tirfors grip and tension trees to guide a clean fall. Tirfors then easily winch the logs from dense brush.

On industrial and construction sites, Tirfors provide anchoring and bracing. They tension guy wires on cranes and derricks. Tirfors also offer an adjustable means of load securing and restraint during transport.

Tirfors feature a basic, rugged design of a drum, wire rope, and geared housing for the gripping mechanism. More advanced models include brakes and clutches. Two handles allow manual operation, or air and electric motors automate Tirfor winches.

A key strength of the Tirfor is its impressive power-to-weight ratio. The Tirfor grip provides around 90% efficiency compared to 60% for a hook. Their compact size and power makes Tirfors suitable for use in tight spaces.

While not designed for lifting humans, Tirfor winches provide a versatile, adaptable tool for securing and manoeuvring loads in many industries. From forestry to construction, the Tirfor remains a mainstay thanks to its gripping ability and pulling power.
